Četiri godine rada, istraživanja i traženja pravog filmskog jezika

Bonefuzz: Márk László explores sound, perception and the courage to step beyond our own boundaries

Some film works are not created simply to tell an event, but from the need to explore the way we experience the world around us. Such is the case with Bonefuzz, an animated short film by Hungarian filmmaker Márk László, which will have its regional premiere as part of the Competition Programme – Student Short Film of the 32nd Sarajevo Film Festival.

Before the film meets its Sarajevo audience, KamoSutra brings a conversation with the author about the inspiration behind Bonefuzz, the filmmaking process, the role of music, and his return to Sarajevo — this time not as a traveller, but as a filmmaker.

The film follows Vajk, a hearing-impaired teenager who connects with the world through his hearing aid. His older brother takes him out of his comfort zone and brings him to a concert by a mysterious band. Surrounded by powerful music, rhythm and an unfamiliar experience, Vajk begins to discover a different relationship with himself and the world around him.

But Bonefuzz is not only a film about sound. It explores change, fear, the boundaries we create for ourselves, and the moment when we decide to open ourselves to something new.

An idea born from questions about human perception

Márk László explains that the idea for the film emerged during a university class focused on adaptation, when his professor Bálint Gelley introduced him to the short story Ködváros by Attila Veres.

From one fragment of that work came the foundation for Bonefuzz — a film about a boy who experiences something transformative during a concert by a mysterious band, changing the way he relates to the world around him.

This particular element was what interested the young filmmaker the most.

“I have been interested for some time in the boundaries of perception and how the human brain can form connections that go beyond conventional sensory experiences.”

For László, one of the most fascinating questions was what happens when a person does not use one of their senses in a conventional way, and how different connections between a person and the world can emerge from that experience.

“I became fascinated by how this could change the way someone experiences reality.”

And this very idea became the foundation of the film — an exploration of an experience that is not limited only to what we can hear, see or touch.

Music as a space where everyone finds their own meaning

Bonefuzz is deeply connected to the author’s personal relationship with music.

László started playing several instruments at a young age, and he was particularly influenced by the rock musicians of the 1990s and the different subcultures that developed around the alternative music scene of that era.

As he explains, through this music he discovered artists who were not creating for popularity or commercial success, but because of their desire to explore new forms of expression. This same approach can be recognised in his work on Bonefuzz, where Márk explores his own artistic language and the space between sound, image and emotion. Being different, searching for new forms of expression and remaining true to one’s own vision are qualities that make every artist recognisable.

“These artists were often radical and experimental, pushing boundaries and creating work that could sometimes be difficult to understand without a different way of thinking.”

Concert experiences from his childhood also became an important source of inspiration.

“I was fascinated by the idea that everyone in the audience hears the same notes, yet each person experiences them differently through their own imagination and personal experiences.”

This difference between the same sound and different inner experiences became one of the important inspirations behind Bonefuzz.

Four years of work, research and finding the right cinematic language

The journey from the first idea to the completed film lasted more than four years.

One of the greatest challenges for the filmmaker was combining three essential elements — sound, animation and music — in a way that would allow the audience not only to follow the story, but also to experience the perspective of the main character.

“The biggest challenge was achieving a truly grounded synchronization between sound, animation and music throughout the film, while also representing a point of view that I am not personally familiar with.”

A particularly important part of the process was developing the sound design. Together with the film’s sound designer, László created three different sound perspectives through which the audience follows Vajk’s experience.

The first represents the real world through the electronic distortion of his hearing aid, the second captures his experience of the concert, while the third represents the transformation of his inner voice.

The film’s visual approach was another significant challenge. The combination of 2D and 3D animation helped create a world that follows the intensity of music and emotion.

“We wanted to capture the atmosphere of a loud underground rock scene, as well as details that could feel as intense and layered as the music itself.”

For Márk László, the process of creating Bonefuzz became much more than filmmaking itself. Behind the animation and fiction was a desire to better understand the experiences of the people represented in the film. During the process, he researched the perspectives of people with hearing disabilities and spoke with individuals whose life experiences differ from his own.

“Even when the source material is fiction, it is important to understand the real experiences and perspectives that inspire the subject we are exploring.”

Sarajevo as a place of return, but from a completely new perspective

For Márk László, Sarajevo is not simply the city where he will present his film for the first time.

Ten years ago, he visited Sarajevo with friends during a trip through the region. At that time, he experienced the city as a traveller, never imagining that he would one day return because of a film.

“Even then, I knew I wanted to come back one day and get to know the city better, but I never imagined that I would return to share my short film at a film festival.”

Looking back, the experiences from that journey — the atmosphere of the region, the encounters and the moments he experienced — may have influenced Bonefuzz more than he was aware of at the time.

“Looking back, I think the atmosphere of the region and the experiences I gathered during that trip may have influenced the film more than I realized.”

Now, he returns to Sarajevo as part of the programme of one of the most important film festivals in the region.

A film about change and stepping beyond safe spaces

For the filmmaker, the Sarajevo Film Festival represents an opportunity not only to present his film, but also to meet other authors, take part in conversations and discover new cinematic works — something he is especially looking forward to.

“I am also very interested in discovering the films and shorts being showcased at the festival. I consider live-action filmmaking one of my main sources of inspiration, so I am looking forward to seeing new films that I did not have a chance to experience before.”

Beyond the festival programme itself, László is also excited about returning to Sarajevo, experiencing the city again and learning more about its diverse culture.

What he hopes the audience will take away after watching Bonefuzz can be summed up in a simple message:

“I would like the audience to take away a feeling of openness and courage.”

This thought by Márk László may be one of the most powerful messages a young filmmaker can share with an audience. Through Bonefuzz, he does not speak only about the experience of his main character, but about a universal feeling we all recognise — the fear of change and the challenge of stepping beyond the spaces where we feel safe.

The film reminds us that openness to new experiences often leads to a different understanding of ourselves and the world around us.
